REVITALIZATION: FORMER GALERIA KAUFHOF DEPARTMENT STORE TO BE PUT TO NEW USE
Sustainable revitalization of Worms city center
When Galeria Kaufhof moved out of Worms' city center in 2020, it marked the beginning of a new era for this key location. Working together with representatives from Worms' Economic Development Agency, the Rheinhessen Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Stadtmarketing Association, we have created a viable solution for subsequent use of the building that will allow it to continue to enhance the appeal of Worms' city center.
Everything you need to know about the project and the space it provides can be found here.
From department store to mixed-use concept
Following numerous discussions with city representatives and Worms' residents, we have developed a sustainable utilization concept. While the city of Worms will use part of the building as office space, we intend to create a mix of space for residential, commercial, retail and culture-related use in the rest of the building. Retailers on the ground floor will ensure that the site enjoys the hustle and bustle of a vibrant city, and the expansion of the fourth floor will provide new residential space. Until then, the building will be managed by ehret+klein Capital Markets.
After 140 years as department store, we are adding a new chapter to the history of the building
The approximately 140-year history of the Worms department store is like a roller coaster ride through German history: moving from luxury goods and the economic miracle to the confiscation of Jewish assets and property, bomb attacks in 1945, determined reconstruction, the reopening of the building in 1952 through to end of the department store era in 2019 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Redevelopment of the building into a mix of residential and commercial space will allow us to add a new chapter to the history of the development of Worms' city center, and we hope that it will also be long-lived.
