CREATIVE INTERIM USE BY THE ARTISTS' COLLECTIVE BROKE.TODAY
Protection of historic buildings meets art
Innovation then, industrial monument today. The power house, which was built approximately 100 years ago at the beginning of the 20th century and is now a listed building, represents a significant milestone in the history of Munich's Schwabing district. As Munich's first combined heat and power plant, its primary purpose was to supply heat to Schwabing's hospital. The furnaces have stood still ever since it was sold in 2018. We are making the power house available to the artists' collective broke.today as a venue for temporary creative use with the aim of bringing this historic site back to life until it is converted into a unique office location.
A building within a building
Following this period of interim use, the building will be carefully gutted and renovated. A table-like support structure will then be used to incorporate new floor slabs that will allow the building to be used as an open-plan and loft office – a building within a building, so to speak. Cafes and restaurants will be included to provide future users and the neighborhood with places to eat.
Would you like to take a look inside the historic building?
Then take our digital tour and explore the power house.
Art and culture with broke.today
broke.today is a Munich-based collective of street artists, designers, musicians, architects, craftsmen and creative professionals. They are reactivating the Maschinenhaus and transforming it into a temporary meeting place for art, culture, crafts, technology, and sports. ehret+klein is making the building available free of charge until probably mid-2022 and is providing financial support for the interim use project.
Since August 2021, broke.today has been hosting regular exhibitions and vernissages with local and international artists. Workshops for street art, sports programs for young and old, as well as open workshops and creative workplaces have also already been implemented.
